There is one class of people that has been responsible for more persecution of Christians than anyone else: governments. They wield the power of the sword given to them by God, but they do not always use that power lawfully. With the coming of the Kingdom of God “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed” (Psalm 2:2)! It is helpful to remember that the evil which is perpetrated is not by ‘government’ in the abstract, but by the sinners who run them. Sinners of all kinds can not stand being called out for their sin, and sinners with power attempt to do something about it. Brothers and sisters, we are called to a dangerous calling, and what is required of us is the courage to stand in the strength of our God for “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).
